It’s official for those of you with the HTC Desire smartphone on Vodafone: Froyo is finally on its way via an over-the-air update.
Android 2.2 offers a considerable speed boost over the previous version of the OS, along with full Flash support and device tethering.
Many Vodafone users thought they were upgrading to Froyo three weeks ago, although that update turned out to be a patch for 2.1 which just added a number of bits of 360 bumph, including a splash screen and unwelcome bookmarks.
After a storm of complaints, Vodafone decided to roll out the Android 2.2 update without these “extras”, and the Froyo update actually removes them if you had them installed via that previous patch.
TechRadar was informed by Desire owning readers that the update is now underway, although the site reports you have to activate the process manually at the moment. You can do this by going to Settings, then About Phone where you can check for new upgrades.
The update won’t be available to everyone on Vodafone, as it’s being gradually rolled out, but you shouldn’t have long to wait if you can’t snag it just yet.
