The app will allow full use of Skype for free calls to other Skype users and cheap calls and texts to other mobile users abroad.

Calls are made using Wi-Fi or a mobile data connection, not a dial-up system as used with 3, with additional support for instant messaging and file sharing. Phone calls can be received using a Skype online number, and the phone book is shared with the existing handset address book – showing when other Skype users are online.

Although the initial release is only available to Nokia smartphone users, who must have a Symbian handset, Skype will be rolling out the app to other devices – including the Sony Ericsson Satio and Vivaz/Vivaz Pro shortly.
