With Sky set to launch its new 3D channel in Europe at the start of next month, the company is throwing its weight behind a certain brand of TV to enjoy its new three dimensional sport and movie features.
And the officially endorsed 3DTV sets for watching Sky 3D are made by LG, in a partnership which will see the two companies clubbing marketing budgets together and promoting both in tandem.
Sky 3D won’t cost you anything if you’re a Sky+HD customer already, as it will come with that subscription, although your LG 3DTV set will probably punch a bit of a hole in your wallet. LG has just announced the PX990 over at IFA, the world’s first THX 3D certified television, a plasma which will be available in 50 and 60 inch variants. Pricing hasn’t been confirmed yet, but you can bet it won’t be cheap.
Of course, Sky 3D is compatible with all major manufacturers, such as Sony, Samsung and Panasonic, and it functions with both active and passive 3DTV sets. Active sets use more expensive glasses with a shutter mechanism to achieve the 3D effect, while passive just requires the cheaper specs you get at the cinema.
3D films you can expect to see on Sky’s new channel on the run-up to Christmas include Alice in Wonderland, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Coraline, Fly Me To The Moon and Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince.
