    Samsung Monte’s GPS

The Samsung Monte has been getting a lot of coverage in the media, mostly because Samsung has been heavily promoting this mid range smartphone in order to capture a greater portion of this growing market. It offers a wide selection of high end features without adding a hefty price tag to the party and it is possible to talk about any one of them at length. Here we are going to be discussing the Samsung Monte GPS functions and how they can integrate into other areas of the phone and the user’s life.

In essence the Samsung Monte GPS is there to let you know precisely where you are and it performs well in this respect. It takes a few seconds to work out your position from a cold start, but once it has homed in on you it can keep track of your position with ease. The native app which supports the Monte’s GPS antennae is Google Maps. This app has become a standard across the mobile industry and it still offers some of the most detailed mapping out there, with the entire world at your finger tips. The Google Maps app lets you navigate your way to any destination from your current position, although unlike standalone sat nav devices you cannot use the app to get turn by turn or spoken instructions, so it is better for pedestrians than motorists. Google Maps is intuitive to manipulate using the Monte’s touchscreen and as well as providing you with a bird’s eye view of wherever you are, it can also give you information about local services, businesses and other landmarks and points of interest. All in all the Samsung Monte GPS really benefits from the inclusion of Google Maps from day one.

The Monte comes with another of Google’s GPS-based services included. Google Latitude is a more recent addition to the search giant’s line-up than its Maps app, but it offers the user the chance to apply the GPS capabilities of the Monte in a far more active way. Once you enable latitude, your location will appear on a shared map and you can enter the details of any friends that you know also use Latitude. You will then be able to see where you friends are in relation to you and it can make meeting up for a quick drink, or avoiding any unwanted confrontation, easy to facilitate. Latitude users can also update their friends on what is going on with a simple status line and of course you can also make sure that Latitude only lets the right people know your location. This Samsung Monte GPS feature is completely optional to use, but in the right hands it could be a life saver.

The Samsung Monte allows its users to geo-tag any pictures which they take. This means that when you snap a scene, the GPS will embed the image file with details of the precise geographic location at which the photo was taken. Geo-tagged photos can be used in a number of ways once you have uploaded them to your PC. Various photo sharing sites and a number of Google services, including Maps, let users submit geo-tagged pictures to them to help build up a library of images relating to a certain location. This means that if you are at one of the world’s great beauty spots you can take a geo-tagged picture and then post it online. Later you will then be able to look at the pictures taken by others and compare your work. Various geo-tagging projects have been used to create incredibly complex 3D representations of landmarks because of the sheer number of people who have come and taken pictures of a place from innumerable different angles.
