Nokia Sticks to Symbian and MeeGo Handsets, No Androids

If there is one thing that the popularity of the Android mobile platform proves –it is the fact that having a great operating system really does wonders for mobile phones.

Take Sony Ericsson for example. The company has been in a bit of a financial turmoil last 2009, but with a strong line up of Android devices (and a couple of Symbian phones), the Japanese Swedish phone maker managed to get back into the game. LG has been slowly losing market share in the first half of 2010, and their answer to this is an infusion of two new devices (as well as an upgrade) to their Android Optimus line of smart phones.

Samsung’s Galaxy Android series of smart phones are also getting major additions. The first addition was the GT i9000 Galaxy S. Then the news about the Galaxy Corby, Galaxy Tab and several other devices on the way also started to appear.

With recent reports indicating that Nokia is losing market interest –with more people thinking of purchasing devices in from other phone makers, many are asking: will Nokia adopt the Android as well?

The answer should be pretty obvious, no they will not. What many folks seem to forget is that Nokia is more like BlackBerry, Palm and Apple in regards to UI choices. While the Symbian operating system is not proprietary, they are very much entrenched with the Symbian Foundation.

As for the MeeGo, that was internally developed by Nokia with Intel. The decision to stick to the proprietary platform is a big gamble –many would say that if Samsung did the same thing with the recently launched Bada OS, then they too would be in a financial predicament. But this is a risk that Nokia has decided to take and they are going to see it all the way to the end. With the upcoming launch of the N9 coming, we will see how well the Finnish phone maker will fare.
