It’s been announced by a Nokia spokesman that the Nokia N8 will be the last N-series device to use the Symbian operating system. That means all later smartphones in the N-series will use the new Linux based MeeGo OS.
What that means is that Symbian will be used on more mass market smartphones while the top end devices will be running MeeGo. That may also come with an increase in the number of mid-market phones with Symbian’s great system and reserve MeeGo for the devices that Nokia wants to pitch against the iPhone 4 and its equivalent competition, as well as touch pads.
Perhaps the upcoming Nokia N9 will be the first device released with MeeGo onboard, although the software was actually released almost a month ago.
