Nokia have announced they will be launching the world’s first TV receiver for a mobile phone, allowing you stream live television straight to your handset. Woah. Its fair to say that watching video on your mobile phone is nothing new, although it’s looks like it’s about to get a lot more exciting.
The new receiver will be known as The Nokia Mobile TV Headset, and will feature Digital Video Broadband, providing you all the tools you need to tune in to live television. DVB allows you to watch shows without having to worry about an Internet connection and without draining your battery life as much (you save on battery life from less data use, but the screen usage is still quite heavy going).
Like a regular headset, the device will come equipped with everything you need to make a phone call and adjust volume, so you can pick up a call while watching TV. Unlike a regular headset however, it will also feature keys for changing the channel.
The headset will be compatible with the upcoming Nokia N8, and other Symbian^3 handsets with the USB on the go feature. There’s an app called Mobile TV available for compatible handsets, which will pre-installed on some devices, or can be downloaded from the Ovi Store.
Nokia have admitted that the service may still be a bit patchy in some areas, and advise to check with local dealers before investing in the headset.
No official release date has been announced as of yet, but we can confirm it will be before the end of 2010. The headset will have a $40 price tag.
