The Nokia 6700 Classic camera is one of its better features and with a phone of this size and style it is interesting to see that Nokia has been willing to include a large, high quality camera in with the mix. To boot up the camera you can make use of the dedicated shutter button located on the side of the 6700 Classic. However, for some reason you have to be viewing the main menu in order to make this hotkey perform this function. The best way to gain quick access to the camera for snapping at short notice is via the customisable shortcuts which you can assign to the navigation pad and access when you are viewing the basic homescreen.
The Nokia 6700 camera features a maximum capture resolution of 5 megapixels, resulting in images of 2992×1944 pixels in size. You can alter this down from the maximum if you want to take more basic snaps and this will of course increase the number of pictures you can squeeze onto the available storage space onboard. There are many other phones that offer 5 megapixel sensors these days, but few have the lens technology to backup this capability and make the most of the large image sizes. Here the Nokia 6700 Classic can draw in a good amount of light, which means that the pictures do not suffer from the light leak and poor performance of other phones with integrated cameras. Low light levels can often leave a phone camera in the dark, but the 6700 Classic performs well even when you have the LED flash turned off. With the flash on you can light up dingy scenes and bring life to those nearby. It will not fill a concert hall and a Xenon flash would produce better results, but the 6700 Classic will serve its users well provided they are not looking for complete photographic excellence, which would be unreasonable.
Before you take your pictures, you can modify the various photography menus to apply effects. For example, you can change the white balance in the pictures so that it matches the shooting situation, although if you do not want to get your hands dirty in the menus you can just leave it on automatic and shoot without worrying. You can add effects to your photos, with sepia for that old-fashioned feel and greyscale if you want to create arty shots. You can also set the Nokia 6700 Classic camera to take photos on a timer, giving you enough time to set it up and then run around to join the group before the picture is taken. All of these features described so far might typically be expected on a dedicated digital camera, but on a mobile phone they are a welcome surprise.
The Nokia 6700 Classic camera can also capture video, with high resolution clips recorded at 15 frames a second, whilst lower quality clips, suitable for YouTube and other sharing sites, can be recorded at a smoother 30 frames per second. Nokia has chosen to offer a range of file formats to which you can commit your clips. For the highest quality MPEG-4 encoding is available, although you can also use 3GP if you want smaller file sizes. All of the same effects and enhancements that are available for shooting still images are on offer in the video mode and you can even use your video files as ringtones to alert you to a friend’s call with some clip of them in action taken at a previous date.
Whilst the Nokia 6700 Classic could not readily be described as a camera phone by today’s standards, its camera is the undoubted star of the show.
