Well, just because we call them “mobile” phones does not mean that we should use the darned things when driving our cars.
Sadly, so many folks seem to keep forgetting this very important rule. Driving while engaged in a conversation over the phone, or not being able to keep one’s eyes on the road due to texting gives a driver the very same handicaps as someone driving under the influence of alcohol.
The big difference for many people is that Alcohol is easy to identify as bad. The real fault is that some users think that just because a mobile phone will not get you drunk, it means that using it is fine. The reality is pretty much quite the opposite of what most people conceive. According to researchers, driving while distracted reduced reaction speeds and focus while driving. This increases the possibility of drivers getting into accidents because of hampered driving skills while using a mobile phone.
The worst part is that these drivers are already familiar with the laws that prohibit mobile phone usage in vehicles and yet they still take the risk. Apparently, the current sanctions are still not good enough to get people to follow the rules. On the other hand, law enforcers and even insurance companies have chosen to investigate possible relations of the use of mobile phones with accidents.
Discipline is severely lacking and while it may seem harmless at first, the mere act of accessing a phone while in the driver’s seat of a car is very dangerous and will not only put the life of the driver in danger, but also the lives of other passengers, people in other vehicles and even pedestrians.
