Huawei Ideos revealed: Budget Android 2.2 handset for the unwashed masses

By Kate Solomon on Thursday, 2nd September 2010

Huawei, the company of mobile broadband dongles and branded handsets, has today revealed its own-brand Android 2.2 device: the Huawei Ideos. Running raw Android 2.2, there’s no Samsung TouchWiz, no HTC Sense, no skin of any kind to worry about, just pure unadulterated Android. Huawei says this was a conscious decision, made so that the handsets could receive OTA Android updates with no software-related delays.

The company is claiming it as the first affordable “With Google” handset to come pre-installed with Android 2.2. Alongside the top-of-the-range OS, the Ideos has a 2.8-inch capacitive low-res touchscreen, Wi-Fi and HSDPA (super-3G) connectivity, Bluetooth, GPS and a 528MHz processor to back it all up. There’s also a 3.2-megapixel camera which comes complete with auto-focus but no flash.

As far as looks go, it’s certainly nothing special. It might as well be an HTC Tattoo or a Samsung Genio handset, or any other low-cost mobile device.

The Huawei Ideos doesn’t have any network deals that we know of yet, but it’s set to make its debut on our shelves in mid-October, priced at around £99-129 on pay-as-you-go.
