Anti-establishment MVNO giffgaff is flying in the face of the other mobile networks, retaining their offer of unlimited mobile internet as others place charges on heavy data usage.
giffgaff is independently run from – but fully owned by – the O2 network, with a people-powered business model resulting in lower price plans all round. This community-driven enterprise has seen intrepid members on their forums offering advice on how to pare down their SIM cards into the shape of a microSIM, wedging them into anything from iPads to the new iPhone 4 and enjoying unlimited web usage.
Whilst giffgaff hasn’t followed suit in shutting the door on unlimited data use, CEO Mike Fairman seemed wary of those jumping ship to the network purely on this premise:
“We have to be careful that customers don’t just migrate over to us because we haven’t capped data, which is why we are constantly reviewing it.”
Members of the network receive all manner of incentives for convincing others to join, from free minutes and charitable donations to straight up cash, but it remains to be seen if the people (but really O2) powered network will topple the current mobile world order.
Continuing to offer unlimited data is certainly one way to attract more than a few converts…
